WHO IS FEEGZ173?

Carlos Jesus Martinez Dominguez — also known as FEEGZ, Figaro, and Firo173, is a Dominican/Puerto Rican interdisciplinary artist and educator.

Born on a military base in North Carolina and eventually ending up in NYC (unfortunately not born) at 5 years old, Carlos grew up in Washington Heights, raised by his Dominican mother. He got into every art school in New York and dropped out of LaGuardia High School of Music & Art anyway. He's had more jobs than he can list, tried things he won't pretend he didn't, and eventually ended up with work in the permanent collections of El Museo del Barrio, the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture in Chicago, the Blanton Museum, and the Belkis Ayón Estate. He has exhibited, taught, spoken, and curated nationally and internationally, including at the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Latinx Project at NYU, and Centro León Jiménez in the Dominican Republic.

He has been leading neighborhood walks since before "Latinidad" was a TikTok topic at places like El Museo del Barrio, Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute, and independently for the last 15 years. The subject matter he teaches is the same subject matter he makes art about. That is not a coincidence.

He is an atheist on most days, agnostic on others, and will tell you exactly what he thinks about the botanica — and why he loves it anyway.
